NEW YORK (August 7, 2009) – These days, life is busy for Ultraman triathlete Jason Lester, who recently captured a prized ESPY Award as the “Best Male Athlete with a Disability”. Lester competed and finished a milestone mark at Ultraman Canada that leaves him in rarified company within the sport of triathlons.
Lester spent the last week of July and first days of August north of the border in Penticton, British Columbia, competing in the Ultraman Canada competition where he enjoyed success in the field of 25 men and women. With his 14th place finish, Lester became only the 23rd athlete to ever complete both the Ultraman Canada and Hawaii Ultraman.
What makes this accomplishment even more remarkable is Lester lost the use of his right arm in 1986 after suffering injuries from a car accident. He was left with 21 broken bones, a collapsed lung and a paralyzed right arm.
“I’m humbled to learn about this most recent accomplishment,” admitted Lester. “I compete for the love of competing and set my goals to finish what I’ve started. I guess this means I’ve been pretty consistent in doing that. It is an honor to be in the company of such elite athletes.”
In the 16-year history of Ultraman Canada, only 84 competitors have ever completed the event. In the 25-year history of the Ultraman Hawaii, only 344 competitors have finished the 6.2-mile swim, 260-mile bike race and 52-mile run. With his success in Canada, Jason Lester has joined a group of athletes who lay claim to having finished both events. Likened to mountain climbing, this accomplishment is akin to summiting K2 and Mt. Everest in the course of a lifetime. Lester will head to Hawaii in November to try and complete the rare Ultraman double by finishing Ultraman Canada and Hawaii in the same year.
